A book of life-hacks from the 90s

The Readers Digest 10,001 Hints and Tips for Homes and Gardens (which I will abbreviate and 10,001 HTFHG) is one of those DK, white background, black serif text, non-fiction books that I remember being pretty much everywhere when I was small. Leftovers of a pre-google era where, if you wanted to know some basic information about an everyday topic you needed to read a book about it. And 10,001 hints and tips for the home and garden is very basic and very everyday.

As a child, I came upon this book around 2013, when my family was moving house, and I found looking through it strangely soothing. First published in 1998, the book depicts the fantasy of the perfect home. Everything is in its place, no one is rushing. The home in 10,001 HTFHG is a quiet sanctuary, and despite its near perfection, the ‘hints and tips’ in the book make it feel easily achievable.

It also gave me a similar feeling to watching life hack YouTube videos on the family computer.
The book is often a little silly. Here’s an example of a chore chart.

Who would invest the effort and money in taking blank background photos of each of their family members, having them printed, then cutting out just the head so they could be glued above each column. And they’re not even very good photos. The lighting is terrible.

BTW, all the images here are screenshots from the internet archive upload you can read here. I've compressed all these images to make this page loads faster. The original upload is much higher quality.

Anyway, in my first ever blog post, I’m going to show some mildly interesting snippets.

I find these images very soothing
This would be extremely ugly
This image is supposed to depict a child shortly after drinking bleach. Maybe the bleach was tasty.
I found these sections super soothing to read as a kid. I would often recall each passage and and give myself the massages the described.
This sounds fucking gross
Diabolical
This is a terrible gift for a child! Can you imagine receiving a big gift bag from a parent but then being told you can only take out one gift per day, then waiting a whole day for a gift, only for it to be 4 crayons. Crayons are great for kids, I liked crayons, but they would not be worth waiting a whole day for.
"What were you wearing?" lol.
This also seems like a bad idea. I feel like you'd wan't to keep your fridge and freezer closed as much as possible during a blackout. Also just kind of absurd.

A disproportionaly large anount of tips involve lemon. It really gives me the impression there was some kind of lemon obssion in the 90's.

I particulary enjoyed the decoraton section during this flip through. Theres lots of nostalgic images of 90's interiors.

I don't think I'd paint my own space like this, but I love these bold colour choises. Super moody.
This however, I do not like. I feel neither refreshed, nor revitalised.
This bathroom is so ugly it's kinda cute. I love all the little fish.
A pinterest classic.

I'll finish off with some painted "illusions" designed to "fool the eye".

Have you been fooled? Ooh that rug almost got me!
